A Pitzer college co-ed published a Facebook post stating
that non-white students in need of housing should reach out to her or the two
other non-white students with whom she plans to share an off-campus house. The
post from Kare Urena, class of 2018, reads: “POC (people of color) only” will
be considered for this living opportunity. “I don’t want to live with any white
folks.”
Understandably,
some perceived the post as racist and non-inclusive.
But AJ
Leon, also class of 2018, and a member of the Pitzer Latino Student Union, responded
thusly: “This is directed to protect POC, not white people. Don’t see how this
is racist at all.” People of color only need apply? Yep, can’t see how this is
racist at all! Where would we be without our institutes of higher learning?
Can you
imagine if a white person in a similar situation had written a Facebook post
saying: “Only whites will be considered for this living opportunity. I don’t
want to live with any black folk?” He or she would’ve been permanently
dismissed from campus and sent to a re-education camp- if he or she was lucky and didn’t run into any “Only Black Lives
Matter” types.
