Oregon
high school students won’t have to prove they have mastery of basic reading,
writing or math skills to graduate from high school-- until
at least 2029, the state Board of Education recently (and unanimously) decided.
This further extends the controversial pause of the graduation requirement that
began in 2020. A concerned parent and sentient being would be shocked and
appalled by this decision.
But
not the leaders of the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) or the members of
the state’s school board, nearly all of whom stated that requiring all
students to pass even one of several standardized tests was unfair to historically
“marginalized” students. These “educators” also believe that even requiring all
students to create an assignment that meets state standards is potentially
damaging to “marginalized” students. I’m damn glad I don’t have a
“marginalized” child and live in Oregon. How pathetic. How condescending. How racist.
We
need a color revolution in this country, one in which “colored” people, i.e.
“students of color,” rebel against the pervasive and damaging condescension
visited on them by “liberal” white folks. It would be a blessing for all if
they would rise up and tell these white so-called “progressives” to shut the
hell up and sit the hell down. And to proclaim, “We are capable of obtaining an
ID. We can learn to read and write. We can even do math. But you are
effectively standing in the way of our ability to do these things.” What a
wonderful world it would be.
Most
schools have long-since ceased teaching the classics-- and any remotely accurate
version of American History and government. Additionally subtracting “reading,
writing, and arithmetic” from curricula would render youth, especially those
of color, unable to cope with the future…or succeed in it.
We
have already defined deviancy down. If we continue to lower educational
standards as well-- in a misguided attempt to make it easier on some—we will sentence
those we purport to help to a life of misery…and the nation to continual
decline.
The end
result of this act-- like the end result of so many other “liberal” decisions,
acts, and policies-- will be disaster. This is not compassionate. This is not
ethical. It is an outrage committed by people who care far more about
their own political agenda and power than they do about children.
Tragically,
the current U.S. educational establishment is a figurative dagger pointed at
the heart of students…and the soul of this nation.
But,
what’s so wrong about not making students learn to do math? What does it matter
if they can’t read or write well?
Duz u
meen so wat if reeding, righting, and math arnt tot in skools? Hoo needs thees stoopid
things, neway? I meen, duz it madder if to plus too equals fore or ate? Or even
ateteen?
It
does matter. A great deal. And those in Oregon will realize that in the very near
future.
