The Washington, D.C.-area’s Watkins Elementary School
recently apologized for requiring third-graders to participate in a Holocaust re-enactment, including digging mass graves and pretending
to shoot each other. Moreover, one parent said her son came home and told her
that he “had to pretend to be on a train to a concentration
camp, then act as if he were dying in a gas chamber.” The child assigned to
play Hitler was reportedly Jewish, an especially nice touch.
The librarian who instituted the re-enactment has been
placed on leave pending an investigation. She is reportedly an unsuccessful Democratic school board candidate who has previously been charged with fraud and multiple counts of animal abuse. The school’s principal, M. Scott
Berkowitz, subsequently emailed concerned parents stating that he wanted “to
acknowledge the gravity of this poor instructional decision, as students should
never be asked to act out or portray any atrocity, especially genocide, war, or
murder.”
Berkowitz added that he still hoped all fully vaccinated parents
would turn out for the school’s “Mother of All Abortion Rallies” on January 4th,
and that he believes the non-vaccinated should be forcefully removed from
society at large and housed in “quarantine camps.”
(Writer’s note: The last paragraph, italicized, is not actually
true. It is akin to “fake news,” in the proud manner and tradition of, say, CNN
and MSNBC. It is a form of writer’s embellishment, or, more accurately,
parody.)
