Pope Francis recently demanded that governments welcome,
protect, and promote immigrants, and called for a simplified process of
granting humanitarian and temporary visas. The Pontiff also urged countries to
stop collective expulsions, stating that the principle of ensuring each
person’s dignity “obliges us to always prioritize personal safety over national
security.” Huh? How does jeopardizing national security improve personal
security and dignity? The Pope is in effect saying that we must prioritize the
safety of a smaller group of people over that of a larger group of people. In
reality, this would currently mean prioritizing the safety of mostly Muslim
individuals from North Africa and the Middle East over that of the still
marginally Christian nations they typically seek to enter…and, in some cases,
destroy.
Must we
then prioritize the dignity and safety of a white supremacist or a Black Lives
Matter member over our national security, too? This is madness. The Most
Catholic One also entreated nations to train their border guards to protect migrants, saying that each new
arrival, regardless of legal status,
must be guaranteed access to basic services beyond
just health care. Francis went on to say that immigrants should be assured
of access to consulates and the justice system, and should be granted the
ability to open a bank account and survive financially. He was particularly
generous to unaccompanied minors, averring that they should be guaranteed
citizenship, and access to schooling and foster programs.
According to reports, the
pontificating Pontiff stopped short of declaring that all immigrants should be
given a mansion with Olympic-size swimming pool, a cabin in the mountains or at
the lake, a Lexus of their choice, and a $1,000 gift card to Wal-Mart.
Shortly after this announcement, a
pro-Islamic State group put out a video specifically targeting the Pope and the
Vatican. A separate video, recently released on the pro-IS Telegram channel,
strongly suggests that Italy is likely the next target of a terrorist attack.
I guess there’s no satisfying some
people.
