The Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(RCMP) recently announced that it is looking for high school students “who identify as women” to participate
in its summer student employment program. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police! To
those of us in the second half of life, the RCMP congers up images of tough, burly—if
not necessarily brilliant-- men in their red outfits and wide-brimmed hats,
ready at a moment’s notice to apprehend evil doers such as Snidely whiplash.
The lads of the RCMP closely resembled the particularly manly
lumberjacks of the great Northern and Western forests. The fact that the
storied Canadian police force is now actively seeking out men who identify as
women seems beyond parody. Yet, the Monty Python troupe seemed to predict this
occurrence many years ago, with its sketch called the “Lumberjack Song.”
