Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos
recently alerted editors that the paper will "be writing every day in
support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,”
adding, “We’ll cover other topics too, of course.” This directive was aimed
primarily at the paper’s OpEd page.
As a result, opinions editor David
Shipley and long-time ‘journalist’/acclaimed biographer David Maraniss promptly
resigned in protest. Maraniss noted in a subsequent post on Bluesky that, as
long as Bezos owns the paper, he will have nothing to do with it.
Imagine how much you’d have to hate
America—and free will—to say to yourself, “Liberty? Freedom? That’s
it, I’m out!”
‘Journalism’ isn’t what it used to be.
But maybe it never was.
