United States House of
Representatives Chamber
State of the Union Address
ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC/CNN
President Trump: “…distinguished
members of the House, special g-“
MSNBC: “We promise the viewers
we’re going to fact check that.”
President Trump: “…when American
troops risked their lives in the D-Day invasion nearly 75 years ago…”
CNN: “We want to let our viewers
know we will be fact checking Trump’s claim as quickly as we can.”
President Trump: “ …a cancer
survivor at 10 years old. You are an inspiration to us all…”
NBC: “Our viewers should know, we
will be fact-checking Trump’s claims
all night long, including this one.”
President Trump: “…one of the men
who first planted our flag on the moon, Buzz Aldrin is here with us tonight…”
ABC: “We should interrupt here to
assure our viewers that we will be actively and vociferously fact-checking what
Trump is saying here tonight. This claim is no exception!”
President Trump: “…and God bless America!”
CBS: “We would be remiss if we
didn’t take a moment to again reassure those watching that we are-- and will
continue to be-- fact-checking this speech…all through the night, if necessary.
The last words the president uttered seem to me, and I’m sure many listening,
to be problematic at best. We don’t know
that there is a God, and if there should be, if She would be inclined to bless America.”
Post speech analysis, ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC/CNN:
“President Trump appeared before a
joint session of Congress tonight for the annual State of the Union Address.
His remarks contained numerous claims that were false or misleading. Here is
how they stacked up against the facts: His claim that the U.S. economy is the
envy of the world is absurd. We’ve discovered that Latvia’s economy grew faster than the U.S. economy in 2018. Also,
at one point in his speech, he used the phrase ‘one-third’ when the correct
figure would have been 31%. Sad, but not surprising.”
Post speech analysis of Stacy Abrams Rebuttal to the
president, ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC/CNN:
“Representative
Abram’s speech was fact-filled and spot on. Loved it. I thought she was so
unifying when she opened by saying ‘Good evening my fellow Americans.’ And then
she said, ‘Happy Lunar New Year.’ Indeed, it is the Lunar New year. That is a
fact. Just…wow! Of course, she correctly noted ‘plants are closing, lay-offs
are looming, and wages struggle to keep pace with the cost of living.’ And she
closed by thanking the American people and eloquently stating: ‘May God bless
the United States of America.’ And indeed She has, Ms. Abrams. We have you! All-in-all,
I thought her speech was just the right mix of policy and passion, spunk and
thoughtfulness. Too bad she got screwed in Georgia.”

United States House of Representatives Chamber
State of the Union Address
ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC/CNN
President Obama: “…the economy is creating jobs at the
fastest pace since 1999. Our unemployment rate is now lower than it was before
the financial crisis.”
MSNBC: “I think that we’ve all got thrills running up our legs.”
President Obama: “…and, as I’ve repeatedly said, ‘If you
like your doctor you can keep your doctor.’”
CNN: “That is just wonderful stuff. Wish I could reach out
and touch him.”
President Obama: “I’ve recently visited all 57 states, and
I-“
NBC: “We would remind viewers to put this remark in the
proper context. The President
certainly believes this and if you take into consideration that D.C. and Puerto
Rico are essentially states already and that California and two or three other
states may soon be split, it’s hard to argue with him. He’s probably just
prescient…as usual.”
President Obama: “…ISIS is really just a JV team that
doesn’t threaten America.”
ABC: “And I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to this
great president for that.”
President Obama: “…and America is an exceptional nation in
the sense that all nations think they are exceptional.”
CBS: “We’ll just stay quiet now—and for the rest of the
evening-- and let those listening and watching drink in the self-evident
greatness of President Obama.”
