What If... Molly Ivins Was President?

I was rummaging through a file-box of old newspaper articles recently when I came across a “doozy”. The article, titled “Ignoring the real threats to national security” was written by Molly Ivins of the Creators Syndicate and was published in the Friday, February 23rd, 2001 Minneapolis Star & Tribune.

It started out “Darn it. Last week was National Security Week- Karl Rove said so- and I was so busy pointing out the idiocies of George W. Bush’s tax cut that I missed the whole thing. However, it is painfully clear the new administration folks wouldn’t know a threat to national security from the ‘Waltz of the Flowers’. They propose yet another blue-ribbon commission to study what to do about the military. Their only other idea is to spend at least $50 billion on the perfectly useless National Missile Defense system to protect us from the North Koreans, who have a warhead but no heat shield for it, rendering it slightly moot as a weapon.

Meanwhile, the hopelessly retro Bush defense team- I’ve never seen so many retreads in my life, from Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Daddy (?)- are Cold Warriors all.

Look, this is really simple. The single greatest threat to the national security of the United States is the rapidly deteriorating global environment.

National Missile Defense does not do a thing to protect us from global warming.
If we were being invaded by aliens from space, we would react more intelligently than this. At least we'd recognize it as a national-security threat."

Wow. Where to start? Fortunately not many people read Molly Ivins’ articles anymore, or at least drink her ignorant liberal Kool-Aid. What a staggering arrogance- the arrogance of the ignorant- she exhibits. She knows the real threats to our security and how dumb our tax policy is. She thinks spending money on a missile defense system is insane. Apparently she hadn’t heard of the Gulf War or the Patriot Missile system. Good thing somebody kept spending at least a little money on these weapons system, for the “Iron Dome” missile defense shield has worked well lately protecting Israel.

North Korea now has their heat shield. I don’t know how one calls Nixon, Ford, Reagan, & Daddy "retreads".

She starts one paragraph out with the line “If compassion is beyond you…” you see, it’s not ‘beyond’ her, it’s beyond Republicans.

An earlier paragraph referred to the ‘Bushies’ blindness.

And the final paragraph reads “Even in the Texas Legislature they know it is from time to time necessary to rethink their ‘pryroarities’.” Ha, ha, ha, love making fun of ethnic and regional dialects and perceived intelligences or lack thereof!

How ironic. Less than 7 months before 9/11 she was claiming there was no reason to be spending money to upgrade our military,  missile defense systems were not needed and was insinuating that ‘W’ wouldn’t have a clue how to keep us safe. Sure he might fight a ‘bad guy’ but not understand the big picture. Like Al Gore, perhaps?!
When global warming flew those planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, eviscerating over 3,000 lives, what did George W. "Bushie" do? For that matter, when climate-change beheads Westerners today, what do we do?

Look, this is really simple. The single greatest threat to the national security of the United States...and to the future of this planet... are people who hold Molly Ivins' views!

Liberation

The British General Gage, in 1774, knew that bribery was a time-honored way to convert an enemy into a friend. This he tried to do by sending a Colonel Fenton to call on the American Samuel Adams, Fenton empowered to bestow on him whatever rewards would end his opposition to the British government. A figure of one thousand pounds sterling for life for Adams- and for his son- was bandied about! Or…?

Adams listened politely, even with a mild show of interest.

Gage’s “advice” was that Adams  “should not displease His Majesty further”. Mr. Adams was reminded of the penalties of the act of Henry VIII, which allowed political enemies of the king/state to be sent for trial in England, which could mean losing one’s head. He could avoid that peril by changing his course…and in the process make his peace with the king. When Colonel Fenton had finished, he waited for Adams to name his terms.

Instead, Adams rose slowly from his chair and said “Sir, I trust I have long since made my peace with the King of Kings. No personal consideration shall induce me to abandon the righteous cause of my country.”

Showing  Colonel Fenton to the door, Adams gave him a message for his commander. “Tell General Gage it is the advice of Samuel Adams to him…no longer insult the feelings of an exasperated people.”

Days of Freedom Past

The overt persecution of conservatives and their ideas continues unabated. Activists in Wisconsin attacking Scott Walker, the preposterous indictment of Texas governor Rick Perry, the attempts to ban conservative groups’ advertisements in several states, the IRS harrassment and many other leftist/progressive actions vividly illustrate their desire to stamp out the first amendment. There is, clearly, a deep and growing animus among the left towards the Constitution of the United States of America. In fact, under the spurious ruse of campaign-finance reform  Democrats are now pushing a ‘constitutional amendment’ that would give the congress the power to censor everything from books and movies to newspapers and television commercials!

They propose to create a federal sensor to suppress criticism of the government, elected officials, and office seekers.  Is that chilling enough? Putin shouldn’t antagonize the U.S. at this juncture. It’s needless. We are becoming Russia. Wait a few more years, V.P., and we might just join you in complete intolerance of dissent and a desire to annex less powerful nations. (Maybe we can divvy up Poland).

Don’t believe it?  Rochester Institute of Technology professor Lawrence Torcello is on record as saying that we should “jail those who don’t believe in global warming.” Jail those who don’t believe. Should we jail those who don’t believe in the tooth fairy as well? Should we jail those who don’t believe in Christianity? Jail those who don’t believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman? Jail those who do?

In fairness, it should be pointed out that this is not the most outlandish statement of leftist intolerance I’ve come across…even on the subject of global warming/cooling/climate change/ lack of change/ change in the rate of change/lack of change in the rate of change.  There is a professor- of “Systematic Musicology” no less- at the University of Graz in Austria who wrote that climate change “deniers” should be executed.

Global warming is the biggest “science-based” fraud since eugenics. And if the Austrian professor of “Systematic Musicology” has his way, it will share at least one of its “remedies”.

When the United States Constitution (that musty but fungible old ‘living document’ in statists eyes) and its Amendments/ Bill of Rights are destroyed, and the last 47 people on Earth who understand the  concept of Natural Law expire… global freedom expires with them.

Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Cuba? The Axis of Evil.

Switzerland, Sweden, Costa Rica, Ireland, Jordan? Nice countries all, but not going to foster and protect freedom around the globe.

As radio host, author and commentator Dennis Prager has so astutely observed, the future of the world will be decided between three ideologies…secular humanism or progressive/leftist beliefs, Islam and Shariah, and (founding) “American” beliefs/values. In a tragic and almost indescribable irony, Americans are rapidly giving up (or are no longer being taught so don’t even recognize)  their own founding values. Leftists do not tolerate “American” values, but do, incredibly, tolerate Islamic beliefs that are virtually antithetical to their own ( the stoning of homosexuals, keeping women veiled and barefoot and pregnant, not allowing them to work or drive, etc.). And Islamist extremists don’t tolerate “American” or secular beliefs, and in fact will exterminate them whenever possible.

Unless something changes, there is only one way this scenario can play out.

Radical Islamists and Intolerant, hypocritical, politically-correct , brutal statist thugs will always win unless people who believe in real freedom are willing- always and forever- to be called every nasty name in the book,  to be shouted down and to be harassed and even jailed or killed.

To sacrifice their lives, fortune and sacred honor.

To begin the world anew. Once more.

Miscellany

The new slavery. We’re back! And this time we don’t just want your bodies, we want all of you. Your free will, your spirit, your very soul. Whether you’re black or white or Hispanic or green with pink polka-dots, it doesn’t matter to us. We are all about equality!

"Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what we can give you! In return for a favor so small it hardly bears mention. You will act, think, and vote a certain way…our way…the progressive way…the politically correct, tolerant, inclusive way...forever. Sich Heil! I mean, cool beans!

And it’s a two-fer! A win-win! We by definition also make slaves of those from whom we take the fruits of their labor to give to you so you don’t have to do anything… but vote for …us!”
___________________________________________________________________________________
President Obama has said, "If 'something happened' and my daughter(s) got pregnant, I wouldn't want them punished with a baby." That says alot about our current culture. No one, nor any action is responsible. 'Something' just happened. One certainly can't be held responsible for something that just 'happened' mysteriously. And babies...a blessing, a miracle, a gift from God? Not so much. A punishment. "How could I be punished like this? Why me? It's not fair!"

Too bad your mom was punished, B.H.O.

              Word up.

The Real Bullies

Minnesota has embarked on a new “anti-bullying” campaign in its public schools. The State High School League (all first letters capitalized, genuflect please) is considering a policy that would allow “transgender”  athletes  to play on either the boys or girls teams based on their chosen gender identity. (Until very recently the term transgender was not found in any dictionaries, abridged or not).

The many anti-bullying efforts at various levels across the nation’s school systems are almost invariably targeted at protecting gays and lesbians. And now transgendered youth. I have personally witnessed bullying in many forms that has not only gone unpunished, but unnoticed by school officials. It has typically been directed at straight students,  “nerds”, and “goody-two-shoes” religious types, among others. Maybe some band members, as well. These kids are not members of the protected class, so it is open season on them.

In fact, incredibly, these self-righteous faculty themselves are sometimes the perpetrators of the bullying, the shaming, the demeaning. Kids are told they can’t wear a shirt with a picture of a hunting rifle on it, can’t bring a Swiss Army knife to school. Students have been sent home for wearing a patriotic shirt and suspended for saying God Bless you after a classmate sneezes. Some have been given dirty looks for wearing a cross around their neck or told they can’t even have visible symbols of Christianity on them.  One student was mocked and taunted by her teacher for wearing a George W. Bush tee-shirt. Told that this was a “Democratic” school. (Check the parking lot and see how many faculty member’s cars on these public grounds have pro Obama bumper-stickers on them. 50%?).

                Who are the real bullies?

And now the overwhelming majority of students are likely going to be forced to accept that transgendered kids are just as deserving of playing on boys teams as girls teams. Even using the phrase transgendered kids is distressing. Where are they on the continuum of changing from birth gender to the opposite- or complimentary if you prefer- gender? Bathrooms, locker rooms, contact sports?

Kids are notorious for changing their minds. What if they want to change their gender back? Where does it end?

By-the-way, I have chosen Bengal Tiger as my preferred species identity. I haven’t determined what sex I’m going to be though.

I just wanted to be on a protected list.

Hong Kong Protests

Where is the United States as regards the protesters for democracy in Hong Kong? Sadly, this president has missed the chance to speak out loudly and clearly- or at all, really-  in support of them just as he missed a potentially history-changing chance to speak out in support of Iranian students and others courageously lobbying for freedom  a few short years ago. In the latter instance, our complicated  history with Iran could have been brought to a mutually beneficial future, quite possibly without bloodshed or Iran obtaining “the bomb”!

This support would have potentially emancipated Iranians, changed the real-Politik dramatically for the better in the Middle East and protected the world from an Iranian nuclear arsenal. A win-win-win. If only. If only the United States did then what the United States historically has done. Stuck up for freedom and the rights of the individual as opposed to the state. If only we’d do that now on behalf of Hong Kong. What an opportunity to change the world for the better, to free peoples as well as minds. (Even if one’s body is caged, one can’t be a slave if one’s mind is free). If only Ronald Reagan was president.

Hong Kong has a history of freedom, and  of boasting one of the highest GDP’s in the world. These two facts are intricately entwined. If we had real leadership in the West, other than Benjamin Netanyahu, this would be a time of great opportunity. Untold millions could be unshackled, as good would be recognized and evil punished.

Hong Kong lies just south of the great “communist King Kong” that is mainland China… that now attempts, successfully, to dictate to the “little island that could” with its historic ties to Britain and the West.

If the U.S. had a real president at the moment, he/she would tell China, Iran and Russia to go lay by their dishes. Or else.
              Let freedom ring.

Secret Service Suspicions?

One of the saddest things I’ve heard lately is that, apparently, a majority of African-Americans think that the recent security lapses involving the Secret Service might be deliberate and race related. Anyone with any familiarity with the service would know how ludicrous that belief is. There are African-Americans serving in the president’s protective detail, but that shouldn’t be a factor in determining the motives of the service. They are, for the most part, extremely dedicated individuals who are willing to sacrifice their personal lives, and, every so often, their safety or even their very lives to protect the president, whoever that may be.

Several presidents, all white, have been assassinated. A couple more have been shot. The Secret Service performed bravely and competently in most of these cases, but these incidents still occurred. Since Lincoln and JFK and RFK and Reagan, et. al., were all white must we then conclude that the Secret Service laid down and didn’t even try to protect them because they were white? Oh, and 3 out of the 4 assassinated presidents were Republican. Hmmm?

One article I read stated that over 75% of African-Americans think that Obama has been treated differently because “he’s an African-American politically”. What the hell is an African-American politically? What do they have to believe? What can’t they believe without selling out their community? Shades of the movie “Divergence”. Blacks can’t leave their faction, politically. Don’t stray off the plantation or there will be harsh consequences to you from those in power.

Many have said that Obama overcame racism to get elected president. No he didn’t. He benefitted from it. I don’t know a single person who didn’t vote for him because he’s black. I’m not saying there aren’t any, don’t get me wrong. But I do know many people who voted for him because he’s black, and they thought it would be a good thing for the country. Some just didn’t want to be accused of being racist if they didn’t vote for him, so it was just easier. I can understand those thoughts. But they aren’t valid reasons to vote for a president of the United States. I, personally, would have loved to have seen an honest, historically knowledgeable, African-American of character become a successful president. (Or an honest, historically knowledgeable, white person of character for that matter- equally as rare!). I’d like to see a Dr. Ben Carson have that chance now.

And, despite the fact that I find Obama’s presidency literally anathema to the country’s survival, the worst thing that could happen to the U.S. would be for him, God forbid, to be assassinated.

It’s  clear,  president Obama, and all presidents, should be protected from madmen by the Secret Service. They almost always have been throughout the years.

And that… is black and white.

ISIS...is?

The United States is unique among nations in that it isn’t  nationality, race or even place that defines its people, it is a set of ideas. Natural Law and limited government of, by, and for the people preeminent among them. Freedom and free markets, republicanism and the rule of law. It doesn’t matter what your race, color, creed or sex is per se’. To be an American you need to believe in these American ideas and ideals. E Plurubus Unum.

It is hard for us as an open, tolerant society to understand the nature of evil. We either don’t see it or immediately go to our default setting and ask ourselves if it might be our fault, if perhaps we caused it. These are noble, mature  impulses but they aren’t enough. We don’t like to see very bad things or, especially, people because it is hard to judge “lest ye be judged”. Like an alcoholic, if we refuse to see a problem, then we don’t have to deal with that problem. It’s easier that way. Maybe there isn’t really a problem at all!

Unfortunately, we are facing two existential threats at this time. So is the rest of the free world for that matter. Yet, in essence we’re all still “partying like its 1999” to quote an old Prince songs lyrics. Many, if not most of us, refuse to see the true nature of either of these threats.

There exists throughout the world, another ideology, one not based on freedom. Indeed it is utterly incompatible with it. Detests it and destroys it whenever and wherever it can. And it matters to those who hold this ideology what your sex and creed is. Does it matter. In fact, they “must” convert, kill or enslave anyone who doesn’t share their radical religious views. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is just one of many  offshoots of Islamic extremism.

Sure we “recognize” their existence, but we don’t really understand what it means. And we certainly aren’t taking action to deal with them as the existential threat that they are. Our president apparently believes that the Islamic State (the first IS in ISIS) is neither Islamic nor a state. Pythonesque.

Moreover, those in our government can’t decide from one statement or day to the next whether we are- or should be- at war with this non-Islamic, non-state (NINSIS?).

The other threat is climate change. You read that correctly. The threat isn’t from climate change itself,  as in differing weather patterns, however. The threat is that the constant policing of  political- correctness is beginning to turn ugly, as most evidenced by the climate change “debate”. Don’t believe in climate change? You are a “denier”. There have now been actual lawsuits filed and injunctions granted against those “deniers”. A columnist for a major magazine- and the magazine itself- were recently sued for an article the columnist wrote attempting to refute a professor’s work touting climate change. He hasn’t written for that magazine since. Freedom of speech itself is under assault. At least the kind that dissents from the politically-correct klan members views, those powerful elites that think they are the majority, but in reality are only attempting to dictate to the majority.

We must understand, both of these threats share the suppression of free and independent thought and inquiry!! And that, in large part, is why they are truly existential threats to mankind, and certainly to the United States.

And now this. The Huffington Post published a piece by  professor  Charles B. Strozier and his co-author Kelly B. Berkell (neither of whom are scientists or climatologists) stating that they believe climate change is, in large part, responsible for the formation and rapid growth of ISIS! Drought conditions, you see. Hard to know whether to laugh or cry.  Hillary Clinton has also stated that climate change is a bigger threat to us than ISIS is.

It is getting scary. In their absolute, rigid insistence that we all believe in- and act on- their climate change theories, some of these folks actually share more traits with tyrannical ideologies of the past then they would ever admit.

Today, ISIS is expanding so fast, there are some saying that they want to be known as simply the Islamic State now, or IS. Some at the top of the U.S. government don’t know what to call them. “Impertinent Savages”? “Imperial Sexists”? “Insane Scalpers”? “Irrigation Seekers”?  Perhaps “Immoderate Scamps”?

To paraphrase a former president, does anything  really  depend on what our  definition of ISIS…is?

No. What matters is  our ability to see and define evil, and act accordingly. This is a struggle between those who cherish freedom and life and those who worship intolerance and death. We may not want a war with "them". But they think a war with us is a "holy" neccessity. We can stick our heads in the sand, but they will find us. And they will cut those heads off. They have already, unbidden, "found" us repeatedly in recent years. In New York and Washington on 9/11. In our embassies around the world. On the USS Cole. In England and Spain, etc., etc., etc. This is a fight that's been ongoing for many centuries. They will never quit trying to kill "infidels". Ever. At least not until we prove to them that we, ourselves, cannot- will not- be defeated. Ever. No matter how long it takes. No matter what it takes.

The suppression of Islamic extremism is no vice.

                The suppression of free speech…is.

Historical Revelations

A couple years ago, while having a brief discussion about history with one of my son’s junior high school teachers, the topic of America came up. I asked him why he thought America had been, historically, so successful. He said it was simply because we were a big country with friends on two borders and vast oceans  on our other two. Oh, and we had a lot of natural resources. That was it.

Dude, that’s like, you know, deep!

I suggested to him that Natural Law was at the base, the heart, the core, the foundation of our success. It led directly and indirectly to an intellectual and moral climate that brought forth limited government by, of and for the people, republicanism, the free market and the rule of law, all of which in turn were responsible for the freest, most successful country in the history of the world.

He looked at me as if I just told him I thought the Earth was flat.

Sadly, this is a common, almost obligatory belief amongst educators and elites today, albeit comically easy to refute. The Soviet Union was the largest country in the world and that didn’t stop its citizens from having to wait in lines for potatoes, toilet paper and, hopefully, a glimpse of some poor quality meat product every now and again. And it has oceans, seas and the Arctic on its borders. We don’t even have to recount the histories of India, Mexico, et. al., to discount the theory that size means economic bounty.

On the other hand, we have Hong Kong and Taiwan as examples of tiny countries with almost no resources that have been economic powerhouses. New Zealand, Ireland at times, Luxemburg, Switzerland? Perhaps political and economic systems are a better determinant of success?

                Box.

Let’s return to the left’s dismissal of American greatness and general dislike for countries and people with inherent advantages. Everyone loves the underdog. I get that. I do too. But I also like logic and consistency.

Let’s look at another successful country, a really, really small one. One whose peoples have been persecuted more so than any other. Millions upon millions murdered, many in the most barbaric manner. It is history’s biggest underdog. It is still targeted today. Rockets are fired into it on an almost daily basis. Iran has vowed to wipe it off the face of the Earth. Several of its  neighbors would be fine with that.

It is a democracy with citizens who are free.

And, incredibly, many on the left in the West- and throngs around the world- actively despise it. Biblical prophesy, anyone? A potentially nuclear Iran and a newly belligerent Russia, Israel not truly supported and defended by the U.S. for the first time in modern history?

President Obama authorizes airstrikes against ISIS and he is generally cheered and supported, yet when Israel retaliates (defends itself) for  Hamas attacks (these are attacks killing Israelis on Israeli soil!) they are roundly criticized. Hamas was using U.N. facilities to stash away rockets and other munitions, knowing that Israel would be condemned by the “world community” if they struck these sites!

Fortunately, Israelis have a man of courage and honesty,  a sober, intelligent adult with a knowledge of history for their leader. Some are born to lead. Washington, Disraeli, Churchill, Thatcher,  Reagan, etc. Benjamin Netanyahu is of that ilk. Throughout history, great leaders have appeared, it seems, when they were needed most. Unfortunately, I don’t see  the next great American President on the horizon. If such an individual exists, the mainstream press, Hollywood, Big Academia, Big labor and even many in Big Business would huff and puff and arrange billions of dollars in such a way as to preclude that person from becoming President. And the incredibly intolerant, stifling,  politically- correct dogma that pervades our culture in general today would make it nearly impossible for that person to govern effectively anyway.

Yet Netanyahu, in a speech given at the United Nations this week, rightly criticized the efforts of several world powers to reach a nuclear “deal” with Iran, saying: “To defeat ISIS and leave Iran as a threshold nuclear power is to win the battle and lose the war.”

He also accurately accused the U.N. Human Rights Council of singling out Israel for criticism when other parts of the world are awash in atrocities. He called the Human Rights Council’s name “an oxymoron” and stated that the body has become “a terrorist rights council.” He further pointed out that the council’s treatment of Israel reflects “the return of one of the world’s oldest prejudices.”

Would that Benjamin Netanyahu, or one like him, were leading America today.

Cooling Planet, Heated Rhetoric?

NASA consultant and climatologist John L. Casey is warning that the Earth is cooling, and cooling fast. In the new book, “Dark Winter: How the Sun is Causing a 30-Year Cold Spell”, he warns that the Earth is rapidly growing colder due to diminished solar activity. The former space shuttle engineer says trends indicate we could soon see temperatures similar to those seen in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s when the sun went into a “solar minimum”- a phase of significantly diminished solar activity such as solar flares and sunspots. He further states that this cold period has already begun, and that the frigid temperatures and food shortages that inevitably result could potentially lead to riots and chaos.

He told Newsmax magazine, “All you have to do is trust natural cycles, and follow the facts; and that leads you to the inevitable conclusion that the sun controls the climate, and that a new cold era has begun.” He claims that the planet’s oceans have been cooling for over a decade and that, since 2007, the atmospheric temperature has fallen as well.

“If you look at the 100-year global temperature chart, you look at the steep drop off we’ve had since 2007, it’s the steepest drop in global temperatures in the last hundred years.”

Isn’t this at odds with the conventional wisdom? Casey suggests that climate-change theorists have wedded themselves to the wrong theory, that global temperatures respond to the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and that any scientist suggesting otherwise is immediately branded a heritic. Yet Russian astrophysicist Habibullo Abdussamatov has actually argued that a mini ice age has begun. While Casey isn’t willing to go that far, he states that the real driver of global climate is solar activity, in particular sunspots. He says that these historically correspond to shifts in global temperature with a greater than 90% accuracy.

The greenhouse- gas warming theorists are demonstrably wrong on two counts. First, as Casey says, “the greenhouse-gas theory, and the global climate models that they produced, never permitted a pause. As long as C02 levels were going up, the only thing that could happen was global temperatures could go up. That has not happened. Number 2, there could be absolutely no cooling, much less a pause. And yet we’ve been cooling for 11 years now.”

“There is no human on Earth, much less here in the U.S.,” Casey warns, “who has experienced the depth and duration of cold we’re about to experience.”

Casey first developed these and other theories pertaining to the topic in 2007. So far, all of his predictions have come true.

He even speculates (see Habibullo Abdussamatov) that one of the reasons Vladimir Putin is so eager to retake the Ukraine is to "re-secure" what was the primary source of wheat for the Soviet Union during cold weather in the Cold War era.

He further claims that we are going to experience the worst crop damage in human recorded history, and that the U.S. might at some point have to cut off food exports in order to feed her own people. And, since almost 50% of corn is now going to ethanol fuel, he believes future historians will look back on using food for fuel as one of the worst decisions human beings ever made.

A Clinton administration global warming report of some years ago relied on two vastly different, indeed mutually- and comically- exclusive, greenhouse-gas simulation models. One predicted a catastrophic drought that would kill off all of the trees in the American Southeast. The other forecasted significantly increased rainfall and forest expansion in the Southeast.

Tragically, we are likely preparing for the wrong calamity.

"Climate change" is, at best, an inexact science. Despite the feverish rhetoric of the left, let's hope that cooler heads prevail. Cooler temperatures likely will.
