Joy Reid Says Black People Are Not Excited About July 4th

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid recently stated that no black people she knows are excited about the 4th of July. She added that most of her black friends simply see it as a day off to barbecue. She further stated that Independence Day is really just a symbol of the slavery of black people, and that she much prefers Juneteenth. She went on to describe Independence Day as “the celebration of slaveholders who freed themselves from having to pay taxes to the Crown for their slave empire.”

The inimitable-- and wildly off-base—Reid, also claimed that for many Black Americans the Fourth of July feels similar to how Indigenous people view Thanksgiving, adding that Juneteenth “to me is the real thing” because the United States “really weren’t a democracy until we ended slavery.”

That Reid would pigeonhole blacks by saying they only view the 4th of July as a day to barbecue is sadly unsurprising. Juneteenth is, literally, not a legitimate holiday. Juneteenth is a recently trumped-up and highly fabricated “holiday.” The U.S. was a democracy long before the first “Juneteenth.” Countless thousands of white men died in the struggle to end slavery long before it was ended in many other nations, so that countless numbers of black people like Joy Reid could claim to be victims.
